Researchers tracking a dramatic surge in stingray populations off the Southern California coast are warning of a corresponding spike in injuries to beachgoers, a trend scientists link to warming ocean conditions driven by El Niño and a persistent marine heatwave.
At Seal Beach, located 45 kilometres southeast of downtown Los Angeles, marine biologist Chris Lowe and his team recently documented densities exceeding 16,000 stingrays within an area the size of a football field during a single day. The team caught, measured, and tagged dozens of the animals before releasing them. Lowe said the species, primarily round stingrays, has concentrated at the site for at least 60 years, attracted by warm water discharged from a nearby power plant and fine sediments that create ideal habitat.
The population boom is increasingly colliding with human recreation. Two state beaches near Huntington Beach have recorded more than 3,100 stingray-related injuries so far in 2026, roughly double the total reported for all of 2025. According to Lowe, Southern California now sees the highest number of stingray injuries in the region, largely because round stingrays bury themselves in shallow sand and strike defensively when stepped on.
Lowe expects the rate of incidents to climb further as El Niño conditions warm coastal waters, drawing more subtropical rays north from Baja California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has confirmed that a marine heatwave has persisted off parts of the U.S. West Coast for an unusually long period, amplifying the environmental shifts.
The convergence of industrial thermal discharge, natural climate cycles, and long-term ocean warming is reshaping near-shore ecosystems at a pace that challenges public safety management. Authorities are urging beachgoers to shuffle their feet when entering the water to avoid accidental contact, while researchers continue monitoring migration patterns and population dynamics.
