Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been linked with a move to Turkish Süper Lig outfit Çaykur Rizespor, as the Black Sea Storm look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new campaign. The 29-year-old has been identified as a primary target for the club, which is keen to add proven firepower to its front line.
Awoniyi’s potential availability stems from a difficult spell at Premier League side Nottingham Forest, where persistent injuries severely limited his involvement last season. The forward was omitted from Forest’s UEFA Europa League squad and only gained entry into the Premier League roster after an injury to compatriot Ola Aina sidelined the defender for a significant portion of the first half of the campaign.
Despite the fitness setbacks, Awoniyi managed four goals and one assist across 17 league appearances for the Tricky Trees during the 2025/26 season. However, with summer signing Igor Jesus and established starter Chris Wood firmly ahead of him in the pecking order at the City Ground, the Nigerian international could be open to seeking regular football elsewhere.
Awoniyi has featured regularly in Forest’s pre-season fixtures, though it remains to be seen whether he has done enough to convince new manager Oliver Gleaner of his place in the long-term plans. A move to Çaykur Rizespor would offer the former Union Berlin man a fresh start and a likely central role in a side aiming to climb the Turkish top-flight table.
