Osogbo Governorship Election Starts Peacefully on Saturday

Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, remained calm on Saturday morning as voters moved toward polling units for the governorship election. Security personnel, including police and other agencies, were deployed across voting locations, while Independent National Electoral Commission ad-hoc staff — drawn from the National Youth Service Corps — were stationed as presiding and assistant presiding officers. Voter registers had been displayed for eligible voters to verify their details, and both international and local observers were present at several polling stations.

A survey across multiple wards — including Ogo-Oluwa, Alekuwodo, Baruwa, Jaleyemi, Okefia, Fagbewesa, Isale-Aro, Asubiaro, Gbodofon, Awosuru, the Capital area, and Tinumola — revealed a largely peaceful atmosphere with no immediate reports of violence or disruption. Residents went about morning routines while awaiting the start of accreditation and voting. Some voters headed early to their designated units, while others remained at home until the process officially began.

In Ogo-Oluwa, resident Wale Ajelogbon said the community was prepared to participate peacefully. “We are ready to vote. We want everything to remain peaceful throughout the election,” he said. Similar scenes unfolded in Alekuwodo and Baruwa, where normal activity continued alongside election preparations. The pattern held across Jaleyemi, Okefia, Fagbewesa, Isale-Aro, Asubiaro, and Gbodofon, where quiet anticipation characterized the pre-voting hours. Calm also prevailed around Awosuru, the Capital area, and Tinumola as the electorate waited for the exercise to commence.

The orderly deployment of election materials and personnel, combined with visible security presence and observer oversight, signaled a structured start to the governorship poll. As accreditation and voting proceed, attention will focus on turnout levels, the integrity of the process, and the transparency of result collation. The peaceful opening in Osogbo sets an early tone for an election closely watched across the state and beyond.
