Patrick Vieira has been officially confirmed as the new head coach of Senegal’s national football team, marking a significant transition for the former World Cup winner from club management to international football. The appointment brings to the Teranga Lions a coach with extensive experience across four major leagues and more than 400 senior matches on the touchline.
Vieira’s managerial journey began in 2016 with New York City FC after a stint in Manchester City’s youth system. Over two seasons in Major League Soccer, he guided the club to consecutive Eastern Conference playoff appearances and a runners-up finish in the 2017 Supporters’ Shield race, accumulating 40 victories in 90 matches for a win percentage of 44.4%.
A return to France followed in 2018 with OGC Nice, where Vieira secured a seventh-place finish in his debut campaign before improving to fifth in the 2019-20 season, earning Europa League qualification. His record in Ligue 1 with Nice stood at 35 wins, 21 draws and 33 defeats across 89 matches.
The Premier League beckoned in 2021 when Crystal Palace appointed Vieira as manager. Across two seasons at Selhurst Park, he oversaw 74 matches with 22 victories, 24 draws and 28 defeats. A memorable FA Cup run to the semi-finals in 2021-22 highlighted his tenure, alongside a 12th-place league finish as he introduced a more possession-based approach.
Subsequent spells at Strasbourg and Genoa added further European experience. At Strasbourg, Vieira recorded 13 wins, 11 draws and 14 losses in 38 Ligue 1 outings. His most recent club role with Genoa in Serie A yielded 10 wins, 10 draws and 11 defeats across 31 matches.
As a player, Vieira captained France to World Cup glory in 1998 and European Championship success in 2000, while his club career included three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal. That pedigree, combined with his cross-continental coaching resume spanning the United States, France, England and Italy, positions him uniquely for the Senegal role.
The Senegalese federation will hope Vieira’s tactical flexibility and experience managing diverse playing styles can translate to international tournament football. His first competitive assignments will likely come in World Cup qualifying, where Senegal currently sit atop their group. The challenge now shifts from weekly club preparation to maximising limited contact time with a squad drawn from Europe’s elite leagues.
