Muon Space Raises $250M Series C to Scale Satellite Production

Muon Space has raised $250 million in an oversubscribed Series C funding round to scale satellite production through a factory model it calls a Mission Foundry. The round was led by Eclipse Capital with strategic participation from Google, Salesforce Ventures, Galvanize, and Wellington Management, bringing the company’s total equity funding to more than $386 million.

The California-based startup aims to treat space infrastructure like cloud infrastructure, replacing bespoke spacecraft with standardized, high-performance platforms that can be reconfigured for different missions by swapping software and payloads. The same core hardware supports climate science, defense intelligence, and commercial Earth observation without redesign.

To meet demand, Muon has opened a 130,000-square-foot automated facility in San Jose with a target of producing 500 satellites annually by 2027, a tenfold increase over previous capacity. The company says this approach will compress procurement cycles that traditionally stretch up to 18 months.

Investors are backing demonstrated hardware. To date, Muon has placed 11 satellites into orbit across six missions without a failure. Its constellation for FireSat, developed with Google Research and the Earth Fire Alliance, is designed to detect wildfires when they are still the size of a classroom, enabling early alerts before fires spread. The company also holds multi-million-dollar contracts with the U.S. Space Force and the Missile Defense Agency for dual-use platforms serving both environmental monitoring and national security.

The new capital will address two bottlenecks: on-orbit artificial intelligence to analyze imagery instantly in space, and integration with SpaceX Starlink connectivity to stream high-bandwidth data in real time with minimal latency.

Muon positions itself as the Amazon Web Services of space — standardized platforms deployed at scale and updated continuously. The company argues that modern space infrastructure, spanning weather data, defense, connectivity, and climate monitoring, cannot run on one-off hardware. Volume, reliability, and fast iteration require an assembly line, and Muon is betting it can be the first to deliver that at scale.
