NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) dealt a significant blow to the illicit alcohol Trade this week, seizing more than 27,000 litres of illegal brews in coordinated multi-agency operations across Nairobi and Nyakach.
On August 21, enforcement teams operating under a Rapid Results Initiative in Dagoretti North, Nairobi, recovered 2,130 litres of chang’aa and 120 drums of kangara estimated at approximately 25,200 litres. Officers also inspected premises selling wines and spirits, seizing two bottles — DrawBite and Black Sambuca — that lacked the required Kenya Revenue Authority excise stamps. Two suspects were arrested and booked at Muthangari Police Station for violating alcohol control laws.
The following day, officers launched an extensive crackdown in North East Nyakach Location, targeting production and distribution networks in partnership with the National Police Service, chiefs, and village elders.
The operations form part of an intensified government campaign following a presidential directive that declared drug and alcohol abuse a national development and security emergency. Since December 2025, authorities have seized more than 2.8 million litres of illicit alcohol and arrested over 970 suspects nationwide.
NACADA’s Director of Legal Services, Leackey Illa, who spearheaded the operations, affirmed the agency’s resolve. “This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to dismantling the illicit alcohol trade and protecting public Health,” he said.
The successive raids underscore a broadening enforcement strategy that combines regulatory compliance checks with community-integrated operations in rural areas. Officials indicate the crackdown will continue across identified hotspots as the government seeks to curb the public health and security risks posed by unregulated alcohol.
