The Igbo community in Kaduna State has declared its support for the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s governorship candidate, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, ahead of Saturday’s election. Community leaders said their decision is based on Hunkuyi’s track record, competence, truthfulness, and determination to run an inclusive government if elected.
Chief Francis Uchenna, President‑General of the Igbo community, addressed leaders from across the state’s 23 local government areas, emphasizing the need for an enabling environment for business—a goal he believes Hunkuyi can achieve as governor. Secretary‑General Vincent Anagwonye added, “Senator Hunkuyi understands the complexity of the state. I have worked with him in the past and he is a man of his word.” He noted that the community will vote for Hunkuyi because of his competence, truthfulness, and willingness to include everyone regardless of age, tribe, language, religion, or social class.
In his speech, Hunkuyi reiterated his promise to run an inclusive government and to review several policies of the outgoing governor, Nasir El‑Rufai, especially those deemed anti‑people. He pledged to revisit the demolition of more than 36,000 shops and business premises by the current administration. “We believe in cooperation and unity. No one can build a house with one hand. I cannot promise what is beyond my control, but I assure you there will be a special adviser from the Igbo community if we win this election. Our windows and doors are open—this is the beginning of an inclusive government,” he said. Hunkuyi warned that any government that ignores the people’s aspirations is not responsive.
The gathering was attended by Igbo community leaders, including President‑General Chief Francis Uchenna, the vice‑presidents for each South‑East state (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo), and the presidents of those states. Local government chairmen from all 23 Kaduna LGAs were present, as were chairmen of various trade unions such as automobile parts and building materials. The Association of People Living With Disabilities (PWDs) organized inter‑religious prayer sessions for the candidate’s success.
Comrade Muntari Saleh, state leader of the PWDs, explained their support: “We see Hunkuyi as a man of integrity and good leadership who does not discriminate—whether Muslim or Christian, rich or poor, privileged or less privileged. Our assessment shows Senator Hunkuyi stands out in character, competence, and compassion, and he has promised an inclusive government and a special status for PWDs.”
