Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos State has warned traditional institutions ahead of Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections. The warning was issued in a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso after reports that some traditional rulers had scheduled Oro rites for the same day.
In the statement, the governor urged traditionalists to respect the rights of citizens who do not share their faith and assured Lagosians of a peaceful election. He emphasized that there is no cause for fear and that the government is committed to protecting lives and property. Residents were advised to carry out their civic duties, while the state has instructed all security personnel to guarantee peace and safety before, during, and after the elections.
The governor reiterated the freedom of religion but cautioned that customary rites must not infringe on the fundamental rights of non‑followers, especially during the electoral period. He warned that anyone planning to incite trouble will face the law, affirming that Lagos remains a peaceful state and will continue to be so.
