The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, and the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes‑Vivour, both lost their own polling units in Saturday’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections. Adamu, a native of Keffi Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, was defeated at his GRA (A1) – PB 010 polling unit by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, David Ombugadu, who secured 158 votes to Adamu’s 129; the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate received a single vote. This mirrors Adamu’s earlier loss in the February 25, 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections, where he also fell behind the Labour Party.
In contrast, the presidential and gubernatorial incumbents performed strongly in their home states. In Katsina, President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) won his polling unit, with the APC tallying 261 votes to the PDP’s 32 in the governorship race and 240 to 50 in the State House of Assembly contest. In Lagos, incumbent Governor Babajide San Sanwo‑Olu defeated Rhodes‑Vivour in the latter’s own polling unit, receiving 29 votes to Rhodes‑Vivour’s 18. PDP candidate Olajide Adeniran (Jandor) also garnered two votes in that unit, while the APC secured 34 votes, the LP 15, and the PDP one in the House of Assembly poll. Overall, the APC obtained 43 votes, the LP five, and APGA one in that election.
Elsewhere, APC candidate Adediran triumphed over Sanwo‑Olu and Rhodes‑Vivour in Osolu Junior High School, Unit 001, Ward G, Irewe, Ojo LGA. Adediran received 79 votes, Sanwo‑Olu 66, and Rhodes‑Vivour just one. In the corresponding House of Assembly race, the PDP led with 81 votes to the APC’s 76, while the LP managed a single vote. In Oyo State, PDP Governor Seyi Makinde won his polling unit with 174 votes against the APC’s 28; the PDP also led the House of Assembly poll 160 to 30.
Governor Sanwo‑Olu also won the polling unit of president‑elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. In Polling Unit 085, Ward 3, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, the APC secured 43 votes while the LP’s Rhodes‑Vivour obtained five. In Ogun State, incumbent APC Governor Dapo Abiodun won his unit with 147 votes, narrowly beating the PDP’s 142. Former House of Representatives speaker Dimeji Bankole delivered two units for Abiodun.
In Plateau State, PDP candidate Caleb Mutfwang won the Manji Pam Eze Street unit (Polling Unit 055, Jos South LGA) with 20 votes; the APC’s Nentawe Yilwatda received 11 and LP’s Patrick Dakum four. For the State House of Assembly, the PDP scored 20 votes, the APC 10, and the LP five. In Delta State, APC Minister of State for Labour Festus Keyamo delivered Polling Unit 17, Ward 2, Uvwie LGA for Senate candidate Ovie Omo‑Agege. The APC obtained 32 votes, defeating the PDP (19) and LP (10) in the governorship contest, and similarly led the House of Assembly race 32 to 18 (LP) and 17 (PDP).
Kwara APC Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq won his Idi‑Igba Polling Unit 004 (Adewole Ward, Ilorin West) with 243 votes to the PDP’s 58. He noted improvements in BVAS reporting compared with previous elections. Conversely, in Kaduna’s Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, PDP candidate Isa Ashiru Kudan won Polling Unit 014 with 77 votes, outpacing APC incumbent Uba Sani’s 40.
In Benue State, APC Catholic priest and candidate Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia won two units at Government House, Makurdi, defeating PDP’s Titus Uba. Alia received 36 votes at the Protocol unit and 130 at the Art Theatre unit, while Uba obtained 10 and 43 respectively. In Anambra, All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) Chairman Victor Oye won Polling Unit 003, Ebeakpu Ward, Amawbia, Awka South, with 166 votes to the PDP’s 74.
Niger APC candidate Mohammed Bago secured 249 votes at Twashagi Rabba Polling Unit 010 (Bida), beating PDP’s Liman Kantigi (56) and LP’s Joshua Bawa (1). In Taraba State, APC, PDP, NNPP, and SDP governorship candidates each won their respective polling units.
However, some incumbents suffered defeats. In Gombe, PDP candidate Muhammad Barde lost his unit to APC incumbent Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, who obtained 195 votes to Barde’s 160. In Kaduna, Governor Nasir El‑Rufai’s Ungwan Sarki Polling Unit 024 favored the APC, with Senator Uba Sani receiving 257 votes to PDP’s Isa Ashiru’s 81.
