Former Enugu State Governor and Senator representing Enugu East, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, lost his re‑election bid to Labour Party candidate Kelvin Chukwu. Chukwu secured 69,136 votes, while Nnamani of the Peoples Democratic Party received 48,701.
Kelvin Chukwu replaced his brother, Oyibo Chukwu, who was brutally murdered a few days before the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections. Oyibo’s death prompted the postponement of the Enugu East senatorial election to March 18, the same day as the governorship and State Assembly elections.
In a congratulatory message to his rival, Senator Nnamani praised the outcome as reflecting the wishes of the majority of constituents, stating, “the people have spoken.” He noted that the result aligns with the current political wave in the South‑East, where many have identified with the Labour Party, and that a contrary outcome would have contradicted this trend.
Nnamani wished the Enugu East senator‑elect a successful tenure in the upper legislative chamber and urged his supporters to remain calm, accept the results in good faith, and move forward.
