The Election Petitions Tribunal that will hear cases arising from the National and State Assembly elections in Osun State has received 14 petitions, while its counterpart in Oyo State received 20 petitions on Tuesday.
In Osun, all the petitions challenge the victories of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, who won the three senatorial seats and nine House of Representatives seats in the February 25 elections. Speaking at the tribunal office on the premises of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo, the panel’s secretary, Mohammed Magaji, said the Action Alliance filed all three senatorial petitions against the PDP senators‑elect and also challenged all nine PDP House of Representatives seats. The All Progressives Congress (APC) lodged a petition against the outcome of one House of Representatives election, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) filed a petition against another House of Representatives seat. Magaji noted that no petition has yet been filed concerning the March 18 State House of Assembly elections and added that the panel will commence sitting as soon as all petitions are in and other processes are completed. In total, Osun has received 14 petitions: three senatorial and nine House of Representatives petitions from the Action Alliance, plus one petition each from the NNPP and the APC for House of Representatives seats.
In Oyo, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal told the News Agency of Nigeria that it had received 20 petitions from aggrieved political parties and candidates as of Tuesday, all filed within the 21‑day period allowed by law. Tribunal secretary Ibrahim Sada explained that six of the petitions concern senatorial elections and 14 relate to House of Representatives polls. The senatorial petitions include two filed by the PDP, three by the NNPP, and one by the Accord Party.
