The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, announced that the state aims to generate one gigawatt of solar energy by 2030, with funding from the World Bank. He made the statement in a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, where he also praised President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for signing bills that grant states greater autonomy in key sectors such as electricity, railways, and the judiciary.

Sanwo‑Olu explained that the new legislation will allow Lagos to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, and to establish the Lagos Electricity Market. He said these changes will improve access to electricity, attract investment, and create job opportunities. “The new bills will promote efficiency, leading to better service delivery,” he noted, adding that the state has already prepared by launching an electricity policy, publishing an off‑grid strategy, presenting an Integrated Resource Plan, and drafting a law to create the Lagos Electricity Market.

The governor reaffirmed Lagos’s commitment to achieving the 1 GW solar target and confirmed ongoing discussions with the World Bank to secure appropriate funding. He emphasized that the creation of the Lagos Electricity Market will help the city realize its potential as Africa’s model megacity.

Sanwo‑Olu also highlighted the significance of the Constitution Fifth Alteration Bill No. 32, which devolves powers over railways to the state. He described this as a major step toward local economic growth, opening up investment opportunities and improving the transportation of goods and services.

Expressing optimism for the coming years, the governor said Lagos is ready to assume greater responsibility for its development and urged collective effort: “Let’s work together to make Lagos the best it can be.”
