Former Katsina State governor Shehu Shema gave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a 48‑hour ultimatum on Friday to reverse his suspension from the party and to rescind the dissolution of the state executive committee. In a petition addressed to PDP National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu and dated March 24, 2023, Shema warned that failure to consider his two appeals within the stipulated period would mean he would cease to be a party member.
Shema argued that both his suspension and the dissolution of the Katsina State executive committee violated the party’s constitution. He highlighted his 24‑year loyalty to the PDP, noting his roles on the National Executive Council, the Board of Trustees, and the party caucus. He asserted that, as a matter of law and fact, a lawfully elected state executive committee could not be dissolved constitutionally, nor could his suspension be justified.
Citing Chapter 10 of the PDP constitution (2017, as amended), Shema pointed out that the Disciplinary Procedure—specifically Sections 56(6)(7) and 59(3)—was not followed in reaching these decisions, which he described as contempt for democracy. He called for the National Working Committee to rescind the unlawful dissolution of the duly elected Katsina State executive committee, allowing it to complete its tenure and to disband the purported caretaker committee, which many court decisions have deemed illegal.
Shema also demanded that the National Working Committee reverse his suspension within the next 48 hours. He concluded by stating that if the party failed to implement these changes within the deadline, his letter would serve as a formal and official withdrawal of his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective Saturday, March 25, 2023.
