EFCC operatives, identified as Peter Dada, were seen in Akure South and Akure North Local Government Areas of Ondo State arresting Point‑of‑Sale (PoS) operators accused of selling naira at inflated prices. Scores of operators were detained on Friday and Saturday, allegedly buying cash from banks and reselling ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes to customers at exorbitant rates.
An eyewitness reported that men wearing red jackets marked with EFCC insignia stormed the popular Oja‑Oba market in Akure, arresting many PoS agents along the road. “They have arrested many PoS attendants in the Oja‑Oba area. If they approach you, they will ask you to disclose the source of your cash, how much you charge your customers, and to take them to the person who gave you the money,” the witness said. Some PoS attendants, warned in advance, abandoned their stalls and fled.
Another source said the EFCC team arrived in a bus at Oba Ile in Akure North LGA, where they made additional arrests. “A PoS agent was attending to customers when a woman came down from the bus and asked how much he charged for each thousand naira. At that moment, I saw the woman signal to some men, and I realized they were EFCC officials. They then whisked him away,” she recounted.
Efforts to contact EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren for comment were unsuccessful, as his telephone line was not reachable at the time of this report.
