The Vigilante Group of Nigeria has appealed to President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to assent to the Vigilante Bill, which would give legal backing to the security outfit. The National Assembly already passed the VGN (Establishment) Bill 2022 into law, and now awaits presidential approval.
Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Commandant General of the group, Dr Usman Jahun, urged Buhari to sign the bill before his tenure ends in May. “The bill has been passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. What we are waiting for is the president’s assent,” he said. “Our message to Mr President is that before he leaves office on May 29, we are pleading with him to please sign this bill for the sake of Nigerians, so that there will be more peace and security in the country.”
Jahun explained that, with legal backing, the vigilante body could create jobs and help fill the security gaps that currently exist across the nation. “In many of our villages and forests there is a serious gap, and we need to fill these places even within our communities. So we are calling on the government to sign this bill so that we can address this gap,” he added.
During his visit to the region, Jahun said his mission was to meet people not only in Ogun State but throughout the Southwest. “I am kicking off here in Ogun State, the headquarters of the Southwest vigilante group, to thank them for their efforts during the last general election and to congratulate all the Southwest governors who won the 2023 election,” he said.
