The Nasarawa State Chapter of the Labour Party has suspended 11 officials for allegedly engaging in anti‑party activities during the March 18 governorship and state House of Assembly elections. The party’s state chairman, Alexander Ombugu, and Assistant Secretary Ashime Benjamin announced the decision in a statement released in Lafia on Wednesday. The suspension was made in conjunction with the national body to prevent future occurrences of such behavior among party members.

The suspended executives include officials from both the state and local government levels. Among them are State Secretary Dahiru Abubakar, Women Leader Hajara Dalhatu, and Treasurer Musa Doma. The list also comprises local government chairpersons: Keffi LGA – Kurah Tente; Obi LGA – Ashefo Jubrin; Akwanga LGA – Promise Ezekiel; Karu LGA – Muhammad Aruwa; Nasarawa LGA – Abdullahi Eya; Awe LGA – Abdulrahaman Kasimu; Nasarawa Eggon LGA – Achuku Ibrahim; and Lafia LGA – Muhammad Aliyu.

Ombugu explained that the action follows a complaint letter sent to the national Labour Party on 24 March 2023 regarding misconduct by certain state and local executives. He noted that the suspended members violated Article 19, Part B, No. 2 of the party’s Constitution, which outlines disciplinary measures for anti‑party activities that bring embarrassment, contempt, or ridicule to the party.

During the governorship race, the party’s candidate, Joseph Ewuga, stepped down in favor of the PDP candidate, David Ombugadu. Although Ewuga informed the party and the national body, the Nasarawa executives proceeded to endorse the rival candidate without consulting the Labour Party, prompting their suspension.

Ombugu added that a five‑member committee has been formed to investigate the suspended members’ actions over a two‑week period. Should the investigation find them guilty, further disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with party law.
