Deputy President and Executive Vice President of Isuzu Motors International, Hirokazu Maruyama, announced plans to increase the company’s market share in Nigeria this year. He emphasized that the Japanese automaker will contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth through its unique technology. Maruyama highlighted Isuzu’s strength in the Nigerian commercial segment, particularly in light‑duty and medium‑duty trucks, as well as its global expertise in diesel engines.
Speaking in Lagos during a working visit, Maruyama described the Nigerian auto market as “unique” with significant prospects. “We want to stay here and be part of the development,” he said, adding that the promotion of new Japan‑made diesel‑engine trucks will help customers grow their businesses, reduce operational costs and downtime, and represent Isuzu’s contribution to the country’s economy. He noted that Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy with a large population, offers many opportunities for the auto industry.
For 2023, Isuzu aims to increase its market share beyond last year’s performance. The company continues to promote its “3S” philosophy—sales, service, and spare parts—by establishing a dedicated team to support dealers and enhance service orientation. “We send our team out to meet customers’ needs,” Maruyama explained.
Isuzu also plans to focus on local vehicle assembly through its Nigerian partner, Koncept Autocentre. Maruyama stressed that local assembly is crucial for rapid industry development, creating component and spare‑part suppliers, generating employment, and boosting the national economy. The Isuzu team has assisted partners in setting up the assembly plant, training specialists, and providing easily understandable assembly manuals for local workers.
“Our management is determined to provide quality commercial vehicles that contribute to the world economy and help our customers’ businesses grow,” Maruyama said, adding that Isuzu’s strength in diesel‑engine vehicles will significantly support economic growth and meet customer needs.
Executive Vice President of Vehicle Sales for Sub‑Saharan Africa, Geoffrey Mulandi, echoed the growth strategy, stating that getting closer to customers enables Isuzu to hear their voices and address their needs. Promotional activities are designed to reach out to customers and deepen understanding.
Anil Sahgal, Managing Director of Auto at Kewalram Chanrai Group, highlighted Isuzu’s unique selling point: “At Isuzu, we want our products to speak for us. That is why we work continuously on new product development to meet customer needs. Our products are designed with high quality, best performance, and efficiency—unique attributes that make us diesel‑technology experts. This focus has helped Isuzu maintain its leadership in the market.”
