A 47‑year‑old Chinese national, Frank Geng‑Quangrong, is standing trial for culpable homicide. On Thursday, before a Kano State High Court, he admitted that he stabbed his 22‑year‑old Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, but claimed he had no intention to kill her. During cross‑examination by the prosecution counsel, Kano State Director of Public Prosecution Aisha Mahmoud, Geng‑Quangrong, who lives in Railway Quarters, Kano, recounted the events of that day.

Geng‑Quangrong arrived in Nigeria in 2019 to work as a marketing and sales manager at BBY Textile Company in Kano, earning N1.5 million monthly. He told the court that Sani had pushed him onto the bed, after which he stabbed her without intending to cause death. He added that he escaped through a window because the door was locked from the outside, intended to take Sani to the hospital, but was arrested when police arrived. Earlier, he had also told the court that Sani had injured his genitals.

The defence counsel, Muhammad Dan’azumi, called urologist Abdullahi Abubakar as a second defence witness. Abubakar, who has over 30 years of practice and taught at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for 13 years, testified that the testicles are highly sensitive due to sensory nerves. He explained that trauma to this area can trigger a fight‑or‑flight response, leading to inflammation, possible erectile dysfunction, urinary problems, a drop in blood pressure, reduced brain oxygen, fainting, or shock, prompting a person to fight the situation.

Prosecutor Mahmoud alleged that the defendant, who pleaded not guilty, stabbed Sani with a knife on 16 September 2022 at her home in Janbulo Quarters, Kano. The offence, she said, contravenes Section 221(b) of the Penal Code. Justice Sanusi Ado‑Ma’aji ordered the defence to provide the prosecution with their witness list and a medical dictionary, and adjourned the case to 6 April 2023 for further cross‑examination and continuation of the defence.
