The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the arrest and prosecution of electoral offenders identified during the recently concluded presidential and governorship elections. In a communique issued by National Publicity Secretary Akorede Habeeb‑Lawal at the close of the NBA’s National Executive Council (NEC) quarterly meeting in Kebbi on March 23, the association condemned the tribal and ethnic bigotry, violence, and voter intimidation that marked the polls. “The NEC calls for the prosecution of identified electoral offenders,” the statement read, adding that election petition proceedings should be broadcast live. This, the NBA argued, would allow citizens to follow the cases, gain a clearer understanding of the facts, and see how the Electoral Act and other relevant laws are applied in election petitions.
The NBA also announced that its NEC had adopted and approved the General Secretary’s proposal to introduce a new NBA stamp. The redesigned stamp will feature enhanced security measures, and the NBA will issue car stickers equipped with QR codes for lawyers. According to the association, these stickers—produced, owned, and distributed by the NBA—are intended to address the shortcomings of the current stickers that are widely available on the streets and often used by non‑lawyers, including commercial motorists.
