The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Fredrick Nwajagu, the Eze Igbo of Ajao Estate in Lagos State, and disclosed that he has been taken into the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Nwajagu was apprehended on Saturday by a joint team of police officers and DSS operatives after he threatened to invite members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra to protect Igbo properties in the state.
In a viral video posted on Friday, Nwajagu said, “We must have our security so that they will stop attacking us at midnight, in the morning and in the afternoon. When they discover that we have our security, they will think twice before attacking us. I am not saying a single word to be hidden.” He also urged the public to help spread his message.
State Police Public Relations Officer SP Benjamin Hundeyin explained that the operation took place at midnight. “The security operatives didn’t find him at his palace, but intelligence indicated he was staying in a hotel in Ejigbo. He was traced to that location and arrested around 1 a.m. He is now in DSS custody, where he is being investigated,” Hundeyin said.
Attempts to contact DSS spokesperson Peter Afunaya for comment were unsuccessful; calls to his number went unanswered and a text message sent to him had not been replied to at the time this report was filed.
