President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) praised the victory of Nigerian‑born boxer Anthony Joshua over Jermaine Franklin, commending the gifted pugilist’s triumph against a formidable opponent. In a statement released late Saturday by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari highlighted Joshua’s resilient spirit as commendable.
The President extolled Joshua’s mentality, noting that personal setbacks and obstacles never dented his resolve. He pointed out that the former three‑time world heavyweight champion demonstrated that hard work, patience, dedication, persistence and humility enable those who dare to win. Buhari lauded Joshua’s courage and discipline both inside and outside the ring, praying that this success would become a stepping stone toward one of the greatest comebacks in boxing history.
Buhari believes Joshua’s achievements on the world stage will continue to inspire upcoming athletes, especially sportsmen and women, to remain undiscouraged by temporary defeats and setbacks. He wished Joshua a bright future and a fulfilling career. Joshua returned to winning ways with a unanimous points triumph over the American Franklin at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night.
