Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu visited the scene of the church attack. Barely nine months after the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Owo Local Government Area, was attacked by suspected terrorists, the church will reopen for worshippers on Easter Sunday. The June 5, 2022 attack killed 41 members of the congregation and injured 69 others. To date, no one has been arrested in connection with the atrocity.
The state government has begun constructing a memorial park in Owo to honor the victims, and Governor Akeredolu said the park is expected to be completed by May this year. Catholic Bishop Jude Arogundade of the Ondo Diocese spoke about the reopening during this year’s Chrism Mass, part of the Easter celebrations. He noted that the church had remained locked since the attack for security reasons and as a mark of respect for the fallen. “The church shall be opened again for Easter Sunday,” he declared, adding that the Ondo State government is also planning to commemorate the first anniversary of the massacre in honor of the victims.
