No fewer than 42,954 schoolgirls dropped out of school between July 2021 and June 2022 after becoming pregnant, according to the latest report by the Controller and Auditor General of Tanzania released on Monday. The 2021‑2022 CAG report, tabled in parliament in Dodoma, shows that of the pregnant girls, 23,009 were enrolled in secondary schools and 19,945 in primary schools.
The report indicates that pregnant secondary‑school girls accounted for 28 percent of the 82,236 girls scheduled to complete their ordinary‑level education in 2021. These cases were reported from 19 local government authorities across the country. In secondary schools, the highest numbers were recorded in Kinondoni municipality, Dar es Salaam, with 4,652 girls, followed by Newala district council in the Mtwara region with 3,783 girls, and Misungwi district council in the Mwanza region with 2,570 girls.
For primary schools, Kwimba district council in the Mwanza region had the greatest number of pregnant students, totaling 9,045 girls. The next highest figures were in Uvinza district council, Kigoma region, with 2,172 girls.
