Supporters of Danish Division Two side Aarhus Fremad are optimistic about the club’s financial future after its recent takeover by Nigerian tech entrepreneur Shola Akinlade. Akinlade, co‑founder and CEO of Paystack—a leading Nigerian fintech company—acquired a 55 percent stake in Aarhus Fremad last week, linking the team to Sporting Lagos FC, a Nigeria National League side he founded in 2022.
According to Soccernet, Akinlade visited the Danish club for the first time on Monday, meeting fans during the match between Aarhus Fremad and FC Roskilde at Riisvangen Stadium. The following day he held his inaugural board meeting at Fremad and met the city’s mayor to discuss his vision for the club.
The latest financial report shows that Aarhus Fremad has incurred a loss of two million kroner over the past two years. Fans hope the takeover will reverse this trend. “This is a community‑based club, so it is important to keep that in mind going forward with Mr Shola. I have been looking into what he has been doing with Sporting Lagos and it looks like it is based on familiar ideas and values. So maybe this can turn out to be a good thing,” said supporter Phillip.
Club director Lars Kruse also highlighted the potential of the new ownership. “It has been quite difficult for us running this club as a business. It has been a passion project for a few of us,” Kruse said. “So, it is really good for me now that we have some significant economic strength due to Shola coming to the club.”
Akinlade expressed enthusiasm for the joint venture, emphasizing its community impact: “I am truly honoured and excited to embark on this new chapter with Aarhus Fremad and further our shared commitment to engaging and empowering local communities.”
Currently topping the 2nd Division, Aarhus Fremad has a chance of promotion to Denmark’s second‑tier league. However, the club has struggled financially in recent years, with former primary equity owner Kruse covering the deficit until now.
