The Ondo State Police Command announced on Tuesday that it has arrested two suspects in connection with the death of 35‑year‑old Olorunfemi Tope in Akure, the state capital. Tope was lynched on Monday in the Ijoka area after his Toyota Camry allegedly crushed two people, killing them and injuring others. When his vehicle was set ablaze, some fetish items were reportedly found inside, prompting speculation that he was involved in internet fraud.
State Police Public Relations Officer Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed that one of the arrested individuals is an artisan and the other an okada rider. She added that investigations are ongoing and that additional participants will be apprehended, paraded, and charged in court. During a live radio programme on Tuesday, Odunlami reiterated that detectives had detained two suspects, one of whom is alleged to have masterminded the burning of Tope’s car. The suspects face charges of murder and arson.
Odunlami emphasized that no one has yet verified whether the deceased was an internet fraudster. She condemned the act of “jungle justice,” urging the public not to take the law into their own hands, to avoid hearsay, and to report incidents to the nearest police station to maintain community peace.
