The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has appealed for the safe release of its former president, Mr. Okey Wali, SAN, after he was reportedly abducted. NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, issued a passionate plea on Tuesday, urging the abductors not to harm Mr. Wali and to return him to his family.

According to the statement, Mr. Wali was taken in the early hours of Monday, 17 April 2023, when his convoy was attacked on East–West Road in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Mr. Wali served as the 26th president of the NBA and has contributed immensely to the growth of legal practice, the promotion of the rule of law, and community development as a noted philanthropist.

Maikyau affirmed the NBA’s full support for Mr. Wali’s family during this difficult time and joined them in praying for his safe return. He described the incident as a stark reminder of the weaknesses in the nation’s security system and the failure of successive governments to fulfill their constitutional duty to ensure the welfare and safety of all Nigerians.

The NBA called on the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to secure Mr. Wali’s release.
