United States President Joe Biden has nominated General Charles Brown for the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, becoming the second African American to hold the position if confirmed by the Senate. Known as “CQ” Brown, he is an experienced and highly decorated Black career pilot who has served for over three decades as a combat leader. Biden lauded Brown as a hero who had displayed exceptional bravery after ejecting from a fighter jet into a Florida swamp.
Brown is distinguished for logging 3,000 flight hours, 130 of them in combat, and for being a member of a military family. Biden emphasised that General Brown’s military experience made him the ideal candidate for the position since he understands the delicate nature of United States’ military operations around the world and earned respect from allies and partners.
As the President’s senior military advisor, Brown would work with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, becoming the first time that African Americans have held the nation’s top two military positions simultaneously. If confirmed, Brown would assume the role of the military’s top officer and would work towards maintaining a force capable of deterring and defeating any potential threat in the face of emerging technologies that could fundamentally change the character of conflict.
Biden also declared that he had prioritised raising minority leaders to top positions in his government. He described the nomination of Brown as an act of celebration and added that all women and men are created equal. Biden recalled Brown’s appearance as a witness in Congress, where the general testified to his personal experience of racism in the military. He said that speaking out required tremendous courage, and stressed that Brown has demonstrated that “real backbone.”
If confirmed in the Senate, Brown would replace Army General Mark Milley, who served through the end of Donald Trump’s presidency. His confirmation would represent a significant milestone as he would be the first African American to hold the top military post at a time when the US is seeking to manage competition with China while meeting the reality of emerging threats from Russia.
