The First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, has urged children to steer clear of drug abuse and be more patriotic towards their country. Speaking at a Children’s Day celebration organized by the Presidential Transition Council at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Mrs. Buhari reminded the audience that Nigeria has committed to the United National Convention on the Rights of Children and the African Union Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

In view of this, Nigeria passed the Child Rights Act (2003) as a means of protecting children nationwide. Mrs. Buhari then encouraged children to play their role in nation-building by embracing patriotism and shunning drug abuse.

Mrs. Buhari pointed out that the nation recognizes children as crucial stakeholders in national development and urged them to be good citizens by listening to their parents and teachers, avoiding misconduct, and doing what is right to make Nigeria a better country. Emphasizing the importance of education in building a successful future, Mrs. Buhari also encouraged children to imbibe a learning culture that would equip them with the relevant knowledge and skills to support the incoming administration.

The event, which featured inflatable bouncy castles, slides, and mazes among other side attractions, was organized to raise awareness about the welfare of Nigerian children and protect their rights. It also provided an opportunity for kids to express their desires to the government.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), hosted about forty children at the Council Chamber of the State House. They included pupils from various primary and secondary schools across the country, led by the Minister of Women Affairs, Paulen Tallen, and the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Aliyu.

The first lady was represented at the ceremony by Salamatu Gbajabiamila, the wife of the speaker of the House of Representatives. Mrs. Buhari’s message was clear: Children should be good citizens, love their country, and stay away from drugs.
