The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that at least 18 people have been killed and 12 others injured in a fatal road accident that occurred in Kano State, Nigeria. The accident, which involved an articulated vehicle, occurred on Thursday evening along the Maiduguri road at about 6:30 pm.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when the driver of the articulated vehicle, who was allegedly speeding, lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn several times. The vehicle eventually crashed into several shops and traders along the roadside.

The injured victims were immediately rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano for medical attention, while the corpses of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

Speaking on the tragic incident, the Kano State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Zubairu Mato, described the accident as “unfortunate and avoidable,” adding that it was caused by dangerous driving and over-speeding on the part of the driver.

Mato urged road users to exercise caution while driving, especially during the festive period, to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and property.

The incident underscores the need for the Nigerian government to intensify efforts aimed at improving road safety within the country. While the FRSC and other agencies have been actively involved in tackling road accidents, there is still much work to be done to ensure that Nigerian roads are safe and secure for all users.
