Police arrest NURTW National President Baruwa, others in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested the national president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa.

Baruwa was arrested at the NURTW national secretariat in Abuja alongside three other officials of the union, the General Secretary, Anthony Asogwa Chukudi; Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi; and the national trustee, Olayi Odion.

The development came two days after the NURTW President raised the alarm of an alleged plot by some individuals and groups to stage a protest at the national secretariat located in Garki 2 district of Abuja.

Confirming the arrest on Saturday, the union Deputy President, Isa Ore, while addressing journalists, said, “We were shocked to see the policemen in their number locking our secretariat without giving any reason.

“Today, Saturday, we are preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected National Administrative Council members, but we just saw police, and they asked us to leave the premises.

“The police said it was an order from the above. I called the FCT Commissioner of Police but he said he was not in town.”

The arrested NURTW members are detained at the Wuse Zone 3 Police Division.
