The government of Borno State purchased 70 buses to make transportation easier for its residents to lessen the impact of the elimination of subsidy.
The State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, stated that this second phase of the intervention in the transportation sector aims to lessen hardship as a result of the elimination of gasoline subsidies during the unveiling.
The governor made it clear that 30 of the total 70 buses will be used to transport civil servants to their workplaces from pick-up at 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and return from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
“I want you to ensure that these buses start operation immediately. You should however be mindful of our situation and ensure that you bring down the cost of transportation. Let us consider it as a social service and not as a revenue generation drive,” Zulum said.
The governor commended the management for transforming the face of Maiduguri terminus and improving the welfare of both the serving and retired staff.
Zulum also unveiled newly constructed structures and remodelled buildings at the terminus.
The structures are to serve as accommodation for travellers, and for operations of businesses such as restaurants and offices.
The General Manager of Borno Express Transport company Mohammed Grema stated that all the construction projects were funded with internal revenue generated by Borno Express corporation.
