Troops from Operation Delta Safe have successfully uncovered and dismantled 34 illegal refining sites within the past two weeks, leading to the arrest of 59 suspected oil thieves and other criminal elements. This commendable feat was revealed by Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations at a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday.
Efficient Operation Results in Significant Seizures and Destruction
In addition to the dismantling of these illicit operations, the troops dealt a significant blow by destroying 38 dugout pits, 21 boats, 57 storage tanks, 10 vehicles, three tapping hoses, four drum receivers, 89 cooking ovens, six pumping machines, and three outboard engines. This resounding success showcases the Nigerian Military’s commitment to curbing criminal activities and ensuring peace and stability in the Niger Delta region.
Furthermore, the troops recovered and seized large quantities of stolen crude oil, including 696,250 litres, as well as 54,400 litres of illegally refined AGO (Automotive Gas Oil) and 1,200 litres of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit). The operation also resulted in the confiscation of two motorcycles, four weapons, and 78 assorted ammunition.
Continued Vigilance in the Niger Delta Region
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba emphasized that the troops have remained steadfast in their efforts to combat crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region, particularly in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and other affected states. By denying criminals the freedom to operate, the military ensures the protection of lives, property, and the national interest.
Raids to Counter Terrorism in the South East
Operation UDO KA, a vital component of the Nigerian Military’s counter-terrorism efforts, conducted successful raids on terrorist hideouts in Abia, Enugu, Imo, and Anambra States. As a result, 11 IPOB/ESN terrorists were neutralized, 20 suspects were apprehended, and 15 kidnapped hostages were rescued. Additionally, a significant cache of arms and ammunition was recovered during these operations, ensuring the safety and security of the affected communities.
The air component of Operation UDO KA also played a crucial role, employing rockets and cannons to target known terrorist areas. Through these targeted airstrikes, the military successfully neutralized a number of enemy combatants and destroyed their structures.
Handover for Further Action
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba confirmed that all recovered items, arrested suspects, and rescued hostages have been promptly handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation and necessary legal actions. This seamless coordination ensures that justice is served and that those responsible for criminal activities are held accountable.
With these recent successes, the Nigerian Military continues to demonstrate its commitment to securing Nigeria and protecting the lives and resources of its citizens.
