The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the arrest of two suspected car snatchers operating in the Bukuru Community of Jos South Local Government Area on Monday. Reports indicate that at least seven cars belonging to residents have been reported stolen in various communities within Jos over the past three weeks.
During a briefing at the command’s headquarters in Jos, the state Commissioner of Police, Bartholomew Onyeka, stated that the suspects were apprehended around 2:50 PM, and a Lexus 300 jeep was recovered from them. He explained that on January 20, 2023, at approximately 2:50 PM, operatives from the Eagle Eye Patrol Team, led by ASP Taiwo Ganiyu Bamidele, received information about suspected car thieves operating along the Bukuru axis. Upon receiving this information, the Eagle Eye operatives quickly responded to the scene, leading to the arrest of Uche Matthew, 40, and Michael Okoro, 45, both males from Sabon Tasha, Kaduna State.
Investigations revealed that the suspects are part of a car snatching syndicate that specializes in targeting vehicles left unattended in unsecured public spaces. In addition to the Lexus 300 jeep, other exhibits were recovered from the suspects. The police are actively working to apprehend additional members of the gang, and the investigation is ongoing.
Commissioner Onyeka also paraded other suspects involved in various offenses, including criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms. He issued a warning to criminals, urging them to stay away from Plateau or face the consequences. He assured the public that the fight against criminal activities in the state is ongoing with renewed determination, despite logistical challenges faced by the command. Furthermore, he called on community members to provide timely and useful information to enhance the police’s response to crime in the area.
