The Oyo State Government has announced its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in tackling the issue of illegal mining within the state. In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, it was revealed that the Director General (DG) of Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Abiodun Oni, expressed this assurance during his visit to the Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Michael Adaralewa, in Ibadan.
During the visit, Oni emphasized the strategic significance of the NSCDC in the fight against illegal mining in Oyo State. He highlighted that the purpose of the visit was to address the persistent issues of theft and irregularities within the state’s mining sector, caused by illegal miners.
Oni further stated that the Oyo State government will not tolerate the illegal activities of those involved in stealing and disrupting operations within the mining sector. He affirmed the government’s dedication to sanitizing the state’s mining sector through the strict enforcement of the Mining Act and other relevant laws.
The DG expressed his appreciation to the Oyo State NSCDC Command for their support during previous enforcement exercises in the state’s mining sector. Urging them to intensify their efforts, Oni emphasized the need to curtail the activities of illegal miners who believe they can operate with impunity.
In response, Commandant Michael Adaralewa, head of the Oyo State NSCDC Command, expressed his appreciation to the state government for their continuous support, particularly in providing security vehicles, vans, gadgets, and other essential equipment.
Adaralewa called on the government to allocate more resources to the fight against illegal mining, including increased provision of security cars, gadgets, firearms, and other logistical support. He assured the state government of the NSCDC’s unwavering commitment to collaborating in the effort to combat illegal mining.
