Demand for Increased Government Funding for Cancer Control – Minister Urges Stakeholders

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has called on stakeholders in the health sector to advocate for increased government funding for cancer treatment and care. In a bid to eradicate cancer in the country, Senator Bagudu emphasized the need for support towards cancer patients and urged actors in the sector to influence cancer-related policies.

Senator Bagudu made this appeal during a cancer awareness walk organized by the Medicaid Cancer Foundation in Abuja. The Minister acknowledged the significant contributions made by stakeholders in the fight against cancer and praised their efforts. He stated that the #WalkAwayCancer event symbolizes unity, determination, and a shared commitment to reducing the burden of cancer in Nigeria.

The 5km WalkAwayCancer trek witnessed the participation of cancer awareness enthusiasts, survivors, caregivers, and policymakers. Together, they marched through the streets of Abuja, drawing attention to the ongoing efforts for cancer control. The event started at Libreville Street in Wuse 2.

Meanwhile, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, a medical expert and CEO of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, emphasized the importance of regular cancer screening for everyone. She warned that the biggest challenge in the fight against cancer is the late detection of the majority of cases.

Dr. Bagudu stressed that early detection is crucial in reducing the mortality rate of cancer in the country. She urged individuals to undergo regular screenings, which are readily available and often free. Additionally, she advised women to perform monthly self-breast examinations as a proactive measure.

Speaking about the event, Dr. Bagudu said, “This event underscores our unwavering dedication to raising awareness and fighting cancer. The overwhelming support we received is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of early detection, prevention, and support for those affected by this disease.”

By advocating for increased government funding and promoting early detection practices, stakeholders in the health sector are working towards better cancer control in Nigeria. With unity and determination, it is possible to alleviate the burden of this devastating disease on the Nigerian population.
