A significant number of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) members in Yobe State have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The announcement was made by the NNPP North-East Zonal Secretary, Babayo Liman, during a press conference on Tuesday in Damaturu, the state capital. Liman stated, “We are here to inform the general public and our teeming supporters of about 600,000 in the six northeastern states of our decision.” He indicated that he was leaving the NNPP with approximately 170,000 supporters in Yobe alone.
Liman criticized the NNPP, claiming that the party lacks the necessary structure and focus to effectively address the challenges facing Nigerians. He expressed frustration over the party’s inability to resolve internal crises for over five months, which ultimately led to his decision to resign and join the PDP in support of its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
He emphasized the importance of communicating his decision to his supporters, stating, “As part of a tradition, when a leader defects from one political party to another, he needs to inform his supporters of his decision.” Liman took it upon himself to visit the six northeastern states to share his position with his supporters. He also reflected on the PDP’s 16 years in power, asserting that it had been a period of significant success for Nigerians. In contrast, he claimed that insecurity was limited to certain areas during the PDP administration, whereas it has become widespread under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
