Renowned South African Actor Dr John Kani Honoured with UK’s Prestigious OBE

Renowned South African actor and playwright, Dr John Kani, has been acknowledged with the esteemed Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his exceptional contributions to the dramatic arts. The honour, personally conferred by King Charles III, serves as a testament to Kani’s unwavering dedication and remarkable impact on the world stage.

Expressing his gratitude, Kani remarked, “I am profoundly moved by this honour.” His powerful performances have not only resonated deeply with audiences globally, but have also garnered acclaim from critics. “I have always been amazed and delighted by how my work has been received,” he added.

Dr John Kani’s illustrious career has flourished through the passage of decades, marked by groundbreaking roles in both stage and screen productions. His seminal co-written anti-apartheid play ‘Sizwe Banzi Is Dead’ in 1975 was a defining moment in his career. Subsequently, he has graced the stage with unforgettable performances, notably in productions such as ‘Kunene and the King’, The Lion King remake, and ‘Black Panther’.

In addition to the OBE, Kani has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the South African Film and Television Awards and the Order of Ikhamanga Silver, recognizing his significant contributions to theater during the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic South Africa.

Zizi Kodwa, the Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, lauded Kani’s outstanding contributions to South Africa’s arts and culture. He commended Kani for not only entertaining and inspiring audiences but also for catalyzing the shaping of South Africa’s cultural identity through his impactful work.
