‘United States of Africa’ – Ex-Malawian President Joyce Banda advocates for continental unity

Former President of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda, has proposed the unity of Africa under the name ‘United States of Africa’ to counter the exploitation of the continent’s natural resources.

She emphasised that fostering unity among African countries is crucial to thwart the neocolonial exploitation by Western powers, citing the need for Africa to reclaim its sovereignty.

Dr Banda made these remarks during her speech at the 12th Annual Zik Lecture Series held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, where she addressed the theme, ‘Reclaiming Zik’s World: Climate Justice And Africa’s Sustainable Development’.

Expressing concern for Africa’s continued vulnerability to exploitation, she stressed, “We in Africa are not completely free, and these are facts that we cannot wish away. Africa has continued to be at the receiving end of climatic changes, largely due to the looting of our natural resources.”

She added, “African leaders must acknowledge our responsibility to preserve the future for our children. The natural resources within our land belong to the people we lead, not to our personal gain. We are custodians of our nation’s wealth on behalf of our people.”

Meanwhile, Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, echoed Dr Banda’s sentiments, affirming that it is a new era for Africa. He highlighted the resurgence of the Zikist ideology, known as ‘Reminisce Africa’, advocating for a united, sustainable, and prosperous Africa.

Furthermore, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, attributed Africa’s predicament to poor leadership, particularly in Nigeria. He underscored the detrimental impact of corrupt governance, using examples to illustrate the colossal mismanagement of public funds.

The event, chaired by Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, was also graced by the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Charles Esimone, Senator Ndi Obi, and various dignitaries.
