SSUCOEN Commends Nigerian Government for Cancelling 40% IGR Deduction Policy

The Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN) has showered accolades on the Federal Government for rescinding the policy that involved deducting 40 per cent from internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of tertiary institutions.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, the President of SSUCOEN, Danladi Msheliz, expressed gratitude for the cancellation, emphasizing that the policy, if implemented, would have exacerbated the challenges faced by the already financially strained tertiary education sector.

Mr Msheliz conveyed his appreciation for the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who announced the policy’s cancellation while representing President Bola Tinubu at the University of Ibadan’s 75th Founder’s Day ceremony.

Furthermore, Mr Msheliz lauded President Bola Tinubu for taking the decisive step in undoing the policy. He urged the President to revisit previous agreements with the union, with the primary goal of enhancing the quality of education in the country.

“The President, as the visitor to the university, pledged his devotion to the reformation of the nation’s education sector, recognizing it as the cornerstone of national development.”

The union’s President expressed the desire for the government to desist from tampering with internally generated revenue while shifting focus towards fortifying and upholding the country’s educational standards.

This gesture by the Nigerian government has been highly commended, as it bodes well for the growth and sustenance of higher education institutions in the country.
