Ajax Amsterdam announced on Thursday that they have made the “painful but necessary decision” to part ways with coach Alfred Schreuder. This decision follows a disappointing 1-1 home draw against relegation-threatened Volendam in the Dutch league. As a result of this draw, the defending champions find themselves in fifth place in the table, trailing leaders and fierce rivals Feyenoord by seven points.
Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar expressed the difficulty of the decision, stating, “This is a painful decision, but it’s necessary. Regardless of the good start to the season, we lost a lot of unnecessary points.” He further noted that the team’s performance on the field had been precarious, and despite the trust and time given to Schreuder to turn things around, it became evident that he was unable to change the course of the season.
Since October 22, Ajax has not secured a victory in the league and has also faced elimination from the Champions League during the group stage. Schreuder had joined Ajax from Club Brugge last summer, stepping in to replace Erik ten Hag, who was appointed by Manchester United.
