The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) has issued a compelling call to action, urging law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to rigorously enforce tobacco control legislation. The primary objective of this enforcement drive is to safeguard the health and well-being of Nigerians.
Mr. Akinbode Oluwafemi, Chairman of the National Tobacco Control Authority, elucidated this pressing need during a poignant press conference held under the theme, ‘Stop Tobacco Industry Interference, Enforce Graphic Health Warning Now’.
Representing the chairman, Mr. Nwokorie Chibuike, Programme Manager of NTCA, underscored the efficacy of graphic health warnings on tobacco packets. He emphasized that empirical data unequivocally affirms the significant impact of such warnings in curbing tobacco use and ultimately preserving lives.
“It is imperative for all relevant agencies responsible for the enforcement of tobacco control laws to promptly initiate the implementation of the graphic health warnings policy on all tobacco products, in order to uphold the sanctity of public health and save Nigerian lives,” Chibuike affirmed.
He further underscored the ethical responsibility of these agencies, affirming that the public trust vested in their offices should be wielded for the greater health interests of all Nigerians, without delay or hesitation.
In addition to the imperative need for enforcement, Oluwafemi highlighted a pervasive challenge hindering tobacco control efforts in Nigeria – the unwarranted interference of the tobacco industry in the formulation of public health policies.
