Nigeria’s Environment Minister Anticipates Positive Climate Change Solutions

In Abuja, at the 9th Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall, the Minister of Environment, Abass Balarabe, conveyed his optimism about finding solutions to counter the adverse effects of climate change.

Balarabe expressed confidence that the discussions during the session would yield effective strategies to combat the negative impacts of climate change, ultimately paving the way for a healthier and greener environment where communities can flourish.

He emphasized that a conducive environment is intrinsically linked to productivity and the well-being of current and future generations. Balarabe highlighted the significance of the tree planting exercise that commenced during the 8th session of the Council, emphasizing its continuity under the present administration.

Dr. Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Environment, underscored the importance of commitment and collaboration in addressing the numerous environmental challenges facing the country. He emphasized that in the face of these challenges, partnership and dedication are the most valuable assets.

Salako highlighted the Great Green Wall initiative as a monumental project aimed at combatting desertification, land degradation, and climate change, serving as a symbol of hope and unity for the entire continent.

Regarding Africa’s role in climate change, Salako noted that the continent is the least contributor to the issue, yet holds the key to nature-based solutions for mitigating global warming and climate change.

Louisa Baker, a representative of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, assured the agency of the UNCCD’s support in addressing desertification in the country. She also advocated for the involvement of the private sector in the Great Green Wall initiative, emphasizing the UNCCD’s longstanding support for the project since its inception.
