The United Kingdom has outlined its reasons for seeking to recruit teachers from Nigeria and eight other countries. Recently, it was reported that Nigeria is among the nations eligible for teachers to apply for positions in the UK. The other countries included in this initiative are Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Singapore, South Africa, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe. Notably, applicants do not necessarily need initial teaching qualifications, as the UK provides a training program for potential migrants.
Regarding remuneration, the UK has stated that all qualified teachers will receive a starting salary of at least £28,000, with higher salaries for those teaching in London. Each school will have its own pay scales for qualified teachers, and pay increases will be based on performance rather than length of service, with annual reviews.
Commenting on this development, Alabi Thomas, a professor of Education at the Federal University of Technology in Minna, emphasized that Nigerian teachers are well-trained and qualified for the opportunities available to them. However, he pointed out significant challenges within the sector, such as governors who delay teacher salaries for months and the lack of promotions for teachers despite years of dedicated service. He suggested that these issues should serve as a wake-up call for the government.
