A game-worn jersey of basketball superstar LeBron James sold for $3.7 million at auction on Friday, marking a significant increase of five times the previous record for one of his jerseys. This sale comes at a time of heightened interest in the 38-year-old LA Lakers icon, as he approaches the NBA’s all-time scoring record. The jersey, which James wore during the Miami Heat’s victory in game seven of the 2013 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, was sold by Sotheby’s in New York. This sale shattered the former record of $630,000 for a James All-Star jersey worn in 2020.
The market for game-worn sports memorabilia is thriving. Currently, the most valuable item in this category is Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1 million in September 2022. Additionally, Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey fetched $9.3 million at Sotheby’s in London last year. As LeBron James continues his pursuit of basketball history, he needs just 178 points to surpass Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s total of 38,387 points, a record that is highly coveted and has stood for many years.
In a separate auction on the same day, Sotheby’s also sold a dress worn by the late Princess Diana for $604,800.
