Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has pledged to support the families of the slain officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). On January 9, 2023, seven personnel from the Corps were ambushed and killed, alongside five others from a sister security agency and a local security service, while on official duty at a mining site in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area. These personnel were attached to the Kaduna State Ministry of Mines when they were attacked by bandits.
El-Rufai made this pledge during a meeting with the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Audi, where he expressed his condolences for the loss of the gallant men who died in active service. In a statement signed by the Corps Spokesperson, Olusola Odumosu, the Governor’s support is intended to help alleviate the hardships faced by the families who have lost their breadwinners. He extended his sympathies to the loved ones left behind and the NSCDC family, promising ongoing support in terms of logistics, operational equipment, and working tools to enhance the Corps’ operational services.
The Governor also expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the NSCDC, particularly in the protection of critical assets and infrastructure within the state. He highlighted the mining sector as vital to the growth of the nation’s economy and announced that he would instruct all Local Government Chairmen in the state to establish more outposts for the Corps in their respective areas. El-Rufai commended Dr. Audi for implementing transformational changes within the Corps, including the establishment of the Special Female Squad, which is driving the Safe Schools Initiative.
In response, Dr. Audi thanked the Governor for his generosity in remembering the bereaved families. He praised El-Rufai’s kindness and humane nature, noting that even amidst numerous state issues, the Governor has shown compassion. Audi assured the Governor that the bereaved families would be grateful for this gesture. He also expressed appreciation for the commitment to build more outposts for the Corps in Kaduna State, emphasizing that this would facilitate better communication, personnel reinforcement, and quicker response times to emergencies. Audi confirmed that the Governor’s support comes at a crucial time, as he has already approved the creation of eight additional divisional offices, three area commands, and more outposts in the state. He assured El-Rufai of the Corps’ determination and commitment to securing lives and protecting critical assets and infrastructure without compromise.
