The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association has announced that it has signed a pact with the Council of Imams and Ulama to promote peace in the region ahead of the 2023 general election. A statement released on Monday, signed by Apostle Emmanuel Kure, Chairman of the Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders, and Chief Imam Dr. Muhammad Kassim, outlined the agreement’s purpose: to encourage both Muslims and Christians in the area to reject violence, embrace dialogue, and remain committed to the pact before, during, and after the elections.
The two organizations emphasized that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reflects their dedication to sustaining peaceful coexistence for the progress of Southern Kaduna. They stated, “Stakeholders from both Christian and Muslim communities are committed to promoting peaceful coexistence among the residents of Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, and Nigeria as a whole.”
Furthermore, the religious leaders expressed their collective commitment to ensuring that the 2023 general election is free from violence. They noted that even if crises arise in other regions, they will work together to prevent such turmoil from affecting their communities and to keep their members uninvolved. The MOU articulates the shared objectives of the participants in support of a crisis-free election in Southern Kaduna and outlines their respective commitments.
The group also warned that anyone attempting to incite violence or create unrest would face a united front from both communities. They stated, “We will jointly mobilize our members to protect the land from both external and internal troubles before, during, and after the 2023 general election.” Additionally, the MOU aims to establish a foundation for ongoing dialogue and cooperation among the participants, allowing for future interventions and mutual interests to be addressed within this framework.
