The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced a concerning rise in Lassa fever cases during week 51 of 2023, accompanied by a comparatively lower fatality rate than the previous year.
In its latest update, the NCDC revealed a notable surge in newly confirmed Lassa fever cases, escalating from 10 in week 50 to 26 cases. These cases were documented in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, and Plateau States.
With a cumulative total of 215 reported deaths from week 1 to week 51 in 2023, the resulting case fatality rate stands at 17.5%. This rate, though lower than the 17.9% recorded during the same period in 2022, remains a cause for concern.
Throughout 2023, Lassa fever cases have been identified in 28 states across 121 Local Government Areas. The preponderance of confirmed cases, constituting 77% of the total, emanated from Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi States. Specifically, Ondo State accounted for 35% of the cases, Edo for 28%, and Bauchi for 14%.
The NCDC’s announcement serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by Lassa fever and the pressing need for sustained vigilance and proactive measures to curb its spread.
