The United Bank for Africa Plc has appointed Mrs. Abiola Bawuah, a Ghanaian national, as its new Chief Executive Officer for Africa. According to a statement from the bank, Bawuah will oversee operations across the continent, excluding Nigeria. Her appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female CEO of UBA Africa, reflecting the bank’s commitment to diversity. With her addition, the total number of female directors within the UBA Group has risen to eight, as reported by Nairametrics.
Prior to her new role as Africa CEO, Bawuah served as the Regional CEO for West Africa, where she managed operations in nine subsidiaries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. She also held the position of CEO of UBA Ghana. In response to her appointment, Mr. Tony Elumelu, the UBA Group’s Board Chairman, expressed his confidence in Bawuah’s capabilities, stating, “Abiola has contributed significantly to the growth of UBA Africa for close to a decade. She brings a wealth of experience in commercial banking and stakeholder engagement.” He also highlighted the importance of her appointment in achieving a majority female board within the UBA Group.
In addition to Bawuah’s appointment, the bank announced several other key executive appointments across the group. These include Chris Ofikulu as Regional CEO of UBA West Africa, Uzoechina Molokwu as Deputy Managing Director of UBA Ghana, Ayokunle Olajubu as Managing Director/CEO of UBA Liberia, Theresa Henshaw as CEO of UBA UK, Usman Isiaka as Deputy CEO in UBA America, and Adeyemi Adeleke as Group Treasurer. All of these appointments are subject to the necessary local regulatory approvals.
