The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, praised President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on Sunday for extending the deadline for swapping old naira notes for the newly redesigned ones. Tinubu noted that appeals for this extension contributed to his late arrival in Benin. He made these remarks at the palace of the Oba of Benin, where he was received by Oba Ewuare II along with traditional rulers from Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial districts. Tinubu emphasized that the extension would provide Nigerians, particularly those in rural areas, with sufficient time to exchange their naira notes.
Tinubu expressed his gratitude to President Buhari, stating, “I must commend President Muhammadu Buhari for agreeing to the extension of the deadline for the changing into the redesigned naira notes. My appeal for the extension contributed to my coming late for the meeting.” He explained that his tardiness was not intentional but rather a result of national politics, highlighting the economic challenges faced by many, including vendors selling garden eggs, carrots, and roasted corn. He stressed the importance of intervening in these situations, saying, “If we fail to intervene in the situation, we have failed in our duties.” Although the extension did not meet all their requests, he was pleased with the additional days granted.
In addition to discussing the naira note situation, Tinubu outlined his agenda, which includes education reform, addressing unemployment, total deregulation of the oil sector, and the removal of subsidies. He called on the monarchs and other stakeholders to support his ambitions. Oba Ewuare II, in response, expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s commitment to supporting the museum project, which he noted would enhance tourism and research. He mentioned that the Federal Government has taken over the construction of the museum through the National Commission for Museums and Monuments and commended the state government for its backing of the initiative.
During a town hall meeting, Tinubu reiterated his commitment to ensuring total deregulation of the oil sector, allowing market forces to dictate the prices of oil products based on location.
