The deputy vice-chancellor (academics) of the Abia State University (ABSU), Professor Godwin Emezue, has been abducted in Umuahia.

The spokeswoman of the Abia State police command, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.

The PPRO said the abduction was carried out at 7pm on Friday while Emezue was at a fuel station in Umuekwu Amachara, Umuahia South LGA.

She said the hoodlums confiscated the ATM card of the DVC’s wife during the incident.

Chinaka said the police learnt that the hoodlums dragged the academic into a Lexus SUV and zoomed off.

The PPRO said: “The Abia State Police Command is deploying resources and assets, including intelligence and technical aid, towards unravelling the crime, and safely rescuing the victim from his captors,” the statement reads in part.

Chinaka further called on Abia residents to remain calm and continue their activities while maintaining vigilance and security consciousness.

She urged the people to collaborate with the police through the provision of information that could lead to the DVC’s rescue.
